Does dog need a coat in winter

Winter is coming soon, When we put on the parkas and seasonal outerwear, we also wonder — does a dog need coats in the winter, too?

As a general rule, large dogs with thick, dense coats are well protected from the cold. The breeds like Alaskan Malamutes, Newfoundlands, and Siberian Huskies, with fur coats genetically designed to keep them warm.

But there are dogs that need to be protected in the winter, they need a coat and a soft bed.

Small short-haired breeds can’t easily generate and retain enough body heat to keep themselves warm. These small pups like Chihuahuas and French Bulldogs need a warm coat in the winter.

Dogs that sit low to the ground. Although breeds have thick coats, their bellies sit low enough to the ground to brush against snow and ice so a Jacket is also necessary for them like Pembroke Welsh Corgis.Lean-bodied breeds with short hair should also be protected from the cold, like Greyhounds and Whippets.

When we consider whether dogs need a coat, we should also consider the dog’s age, health status, and acclimation to cold temperatures. Senior, very young, and sick dogs can have trouble staying warm even under mild conditions, while a healthy adult dog who is used to the cold can be quite happy even when it’s very chilly.
